Moving Tips

 

Welcome to our moving tips page! Here are a few tips to help you on your way to your next move:

It is important to book your moving services well ahead to secure your ideal moving date.

 8 Weeks  Before Moving Day

Arrange to transfer school records if you have children.

Decide the date would like to move

Contact your insurance agent to transfer property, fire, auto and medical insurance.

Call for an estimate, and show Moving Consultant things that need to be moved. Discuss if other services are required: Packing, Storage, Un-Packing…etc.

Go thorough home and make a list of what needs to stay, be sold, donated, or thrown out

Gather information from doctors, business associates, clubs, dentists and lawyers in new location

Obtain your post office's change of address kit.

Keep all documents and information connected with your move. This information should not be packed away. It will be extremely helpful on you moving day

6 Weeks  Before Moving Day

Ask phone company at destination if service can be connected before arrival

Contact any clubs or associations you are associated with for information on transferring, selling or ending you memberships.

Ask your bank to transfer your accounts to the branch nearest your new home

Make travel arrangements, flight, hotel, vehicle rental, etc.

4 Weeks  Before Moving Day

If you plan to do the packing yourself, start collecting suitable containers and packing materials.

Start using up all extra food stocks, frozen food (cannot be shipped) and canned food, it will reduce the weight of your shipment and shipping costs.

Contact people who work for you on a regular basis, such as pool maintenance companies and gardeners, to cancel their services. Leave their business cards for new owners.

Cancel newspaper delivery and trash pickup effective on your move date.

Consider having a garage sale and/or dispose of unwanted items well in advance of your move.

2 Weeks  Before Moving Day

Make final packing decisions. Start preparing for the move by packing those items you don’t use often.

Arrange for a baby sitter on moving day.

Organize all of your moving and travel documents as well as valuables you will be taking with you the day of the move

Label all boxes with your name, and name of room you would like them moved into.

Take care of financial arrangements like transferring bank accounts, contents of safe deposit

Arrange transport of pets and plants. Secure all records from the veterinarian and see that rabies and identification tags are attached to the pets collar.

Stop auto delivery of propane gas or fuel unless it is really needed.

Arrange to disconnect your satellite or cable TV coverage.

1 Weeks  Before Moving Day

Confirm moving and delivery dates with movers or check your truck reservation.

Pack your car for the move. (Pack items you intend on moving yourself)

Finish packing all personal items.

Mark boxes requiring special attention, fragile handling, and load last preferences.

Empty, defrost and clean your refrigerator and freezer and clean your stove at least 24 hours before moving.

Confirm connect dates for utilities in your new home.

Arrange for someone to read the level of propane gas or fuel oil in tanks that remain on the property if your sales contract requires the new owners to pay you market price for the fuel.

Make sure your mover knows the address and phone number where you can be reached until you get into your new home. Cell phone or E-mail are excellent ways to communicate during the move.

On Before Moving Day

Sign the form at the beginning of the move. This will instruct the crew to begin the move

Walk through every part of the house to find stray items, opening cabinet and closet doors

Keep all children and pets away from the moving truck. Keep children on a normal routine as much as possible. Set aside a few toys or set up a movie in a quiet room.

Review all paperwork and details with your mover.

Supervise movers as they load, then again at delivery to make sure boxes and other items go to the right rooms at your new home.

Complete a final inspection of your home with your mover; make sure all rooms, closets, etc. are empty.

Take a last minute walk-through to make sure doors and windows are locked, lights are off, old keys and garage door openers are left for future residents, and that you haven’t left anything behind.

Ariving to your New Home

Prior to unloading at your new home, you should have a good idea of where you want your furniture placed.

Examine everything as it's unloaded, you will be asked to sign for its receipt and condition.

Obtain numbers needed in an emergency such as fire department and police.

Check with post office to see if there is any mail that is being held for you.

Pick up a set of keys. (Make copies for you and people in your home)
