Storage Tips

Do not store any flammables, corrosives or explosives. These include matches, solvents, aerosol cans and especially propane tanks or fire extinguishers. It could void your storage insurance as these types of items are banned under the dangerous goods act.

Don't store any flour or cereal products and if at all possible absolutely no food. These types of items attract bugs mice etc.

We suggest the use of mattress bags so that no dust or odors get into your mattresses.

Arrange storage insurance. Goods are usually stored at your own risk as the storage companies cannot verify every item in storage.

Disassemble items such as tables, bed frames, etc. (This will save space.) Wrap and label all pieces for an easier time when you have to reassemble them. Put all hard ware in bags and mark the bags accordingly.

When you disassemble electronics, such as computers, stereos, things that have numerous cords, place small colored stickers on the cord and the same color sticker where the cord goes.   If possible, use the original boxes to store your electronics and other items.

When storing metal items, To prevent rusting rub a small amount of machine oil on metal tools, bicycles, and equipment. Drain and clean all debris from all equipment before you store them.

Pack blankets, draperies, and dress clothes on the hanger in a wardrobe box.

Always use high quality locks on your unit. Locks are available for sale-just ask your site manager for a recommendation.

Always use climate control for humidity sensitive items.

Whenever possible, place dressers and tables top-to-top to save space.

Appliances: A refrigerator or freezer should be thoroughly dry and stored with its door slightly ajar. Make sure that all appliances are clean and dry before storing them.

Mirrors, Windows, and Screens: These items should be stored on edges, not flat.  Mirror and Picture boxes are available to protect these valuables.

Books and Documents: Pack books flat to protect their spines. Do not place boxes directly on concrete floors, but use pallets or skids to prevent moisture absorption. Use packing to fill all empty pockets in the boxes. Do not pack fragile items in the same box with books and do not overload.
