Packing Tips Montreal

If you would like to do your own packing, we can provide you with any supplies that you may need, such as bubble wrap and boxes of all sizes.

Following are some packing tips and guidelines for packing household items to move:

Before packing

• Identify all the items to be packed.
• Create a schedule for packing all items for planning purposes.
• Purchase cartons and materials (including packing paper and plastic covers, bubble wrap and tape). Get 2 or 3 uniform-sized boxes for packing to save storage space by stacking.
• Get some garment boxes that have strong crossbars across the top to hang clothes like dresses and suits.
• Get packing tape and masking tape that are needed for taping boxes and packing.
• Get strong cord/rope for tying boxes and items.
• Pack boxes firmly to prevent the contents from shifting during your move.
• Get labels (preferably colored labels) and markers for labeling all packed items.

Packing

• Move all the similar small items together for easy packing.
• Put heavy items in small boxes and light items in large boxes.
• Pack fragile and non-fragile items separately.
• Pack one room at a time, marking each box with a description of its contents and destination (i.e. kitchen, master bath).
• After packing a box, label the box immediately. Make sure that all the boxes containing fragile and valuable items are labeled.
• Distribute heavy items into smaller boxes for better manageability and to avoid a single heavy box. Remember that the weight of the box should be no more than 30 to 40 lbs. Fill the empty space in these boxes with packing paper.
• After packing all boxes, Create a inventory list of all packed boxes along with their labels (and contents).
• Following are some more detailed packing tips

Appliances

• Defrost and thoroughly dry your refrigerator and freezer before moving day
• Empty all the contents of appliances like Freezer or refrigerator, washer and dryer.
• Unscrew water connectors for your washer or have a serviceman do this. 
• Remove all the perishables and don’t pack them.
• If exists, remove all the combustible fluids.
• Secure and lock down all movable parts like doors and trays.
• Cover all the items with packing paper for protection.

Furniture

• Clean up all the furniture and apply a protective coat.
• Wrap all the legs of chairs with packing paper.
• Cover all the upholstered items with plastic sheet (covers).
• Dismantle as many furniture items as possible like tables.
• For furniture with many parts, mark them for easy assembling later.
• Pack all the legs and extra leaves of tables with padding.
• When disassembling furniture, beds, lamps, etc. put the hardware into a plastic bag along with any assembly tips and tape it onto the item itself.

Electronics

• Use the original boxes to pack electronic items, if available.
• Pack records and CDs vertically in boxes. Don't stack them flat.
• Tie down all the movable arms and wrap with paper mats.
• Use sturdy boxes and lot of padding while packing them.
• Remember to pack all the associated cables and power cords.
• Make sure that these boxes are labeled and marked as Electronic Fragile.

Fragile items

• Use "FRAGILE" labels on boxes with breakable items. This will alert movers to handle with care.
• Use caution and be very careful while packing these fragile items like glasses, mirrors, ceramics and dishes.
• Group all the similar items into boxes. Fill the empty space with packing paper.
• For mirrors, mark the edges on the box and always stand them on edge (not flat on the floor) to avoid breakage.
• Make sure that all these boxes are also labeled and marked as Fragile.

Unpacking

• Get the inventory list of all the boxes to be unpacked.
• Plan and schedule to unload and unpack all these boxes.
• If needed, re-assemble the units using the tools from small tool box.
• Unload the boxes into the appropriate rooms based on their labels.
• Unpack boxes room by room for easy installment based workload.
• Assemble all the items that were dismantled while packing.
• Make sure all the unpacked items are handled before going to another box/room.

What Not To Pack for the Moving Truck

• It is best to take the following items with you in your own car, mini-van or airplane.
• Cash
• Jewelry
• Contents of Safety Deposit Box
• Stamp Collections /Coin
• Deeds/Wills
• Bank/Mortgage/ Stocks/Bonds/Other Valuable Documents
• Sentimental Objects/Family Photos
• Hazardous Goods
• The following items are considered dangerous and/or hazardous and cannot be moved by the moving company.
• BBQ Tanks/Pressurized Tanks
• Ammunition and/or Loaded Firearms
• Explosives/ Firecrackers/Flares
• Gasoline/Kerosene
• Matches or Lighter Fluid
• Flammable or Corrosive Chemicals
• Paint
• Aerosol Cans
• Cleaning Fluids and Bleach
• Batteries
• Perishable Goods/Food in Glass Jars
